An Irish Guards soldier accused of murdering a father of three while home on leave from Germany was refused bail in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.

Mr Scott Bradshaw (19), Devon Square, Antrim, is one of five men who deny murdering Mr Denver Smith, of Moss Drive, Ballycraigy, Antrim. Mr Smith (42) was battered to death last New Year's Eve after trouble flared at a party in the Stiles Estate.

A Crown lawyer said Mr Bradshaw might be safer in prison as the UVF had indicated they were going to exact revenge.
