The Irish actor Dermot McNamara (76), producer of the US based Irish Players, has died in New York after a short illness.

The Irish actor Dermot McNamara (76), producer of the US based Irish Players, has died in New York after a short illness.

His career began in the Gate Theatre, Dublin, where he appeared in Wilde and Shaw classics. He then joined the Abbey Theatre, before going to the US with Ronnie Ibbs Productions in the early 1950s. He established The Irish Players in New York in 1955.

He is survived by his wife, Deirdre, and their three children.
