Woman in her 70s dies in apartment fire in Cavan

Foul play not suspected after fire reported by neighbours in third floor of apartment block

Gardaí are investigating a fire at Church Street in Cavan town, in which a woman in her 70s died.

The fire was reported by neighbours at 2.15pm in the third floor of an apartment block in the town.

The body of the woman was discovered in the buliding. Her body has been taken to Cavan General Hospital, where a postmortem will be carried out.

Belturbet and Cavan Fire Brigades and gardaí were on the scene, and Church Street was closed off for a time.

A technical examination of the scene will be carried out later, but gardaí do not suspect foul play.
