Woman (71) knocked from her bike in a hit and run in Cork

A 71-year-old woman is in hospital after was knocked from her bike by a motorist who failed to stop in Co Cork yesterday.

The man in his mid-20s was arrested by gardaí in the Midleton area of Co Cork just after midnight following a hit and run on the cyclist at Haymount, Lower Woodstock in Carrigtwohill at around 7.30pm.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries and it is understood that she remains at the hospital today receiving treatment.

Gardaí immediately began a search for the car and its driver after the alarm was raised by some passers-by.

The road was closed overnight and diversions were put in place to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene of the collision as part of the garda criminal investigation into the incident.

The man who was arrested in the Midleton area was released without charge and Gardaí are to prepare a file for the DPP.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Midleton have also seized a car belonging to the arrested man, which they believe was involved in the collision. It was removed for a forensic examination by garda technical experts.
