Wheelchair-friendly beach mats rolled out at Dublin’s Dollymount Strand

Council anticipates 125m mats will be extended further along beach in future years

Wheelchair-friendly beach mats have been rolled out at Dollymount Strand in Dublin, which will give wheelchair and mobility scooter users greater access to the North Bull Island Nature Reserve and beach areas.

The specially designed mats extend 125m onto the beach from the end of Causeway Road and will allow wheelchair users greater movement across the sand.

Dublin City Council anticipates that the mats will be extended further along the beach in future years.

North Bull Island also has a free beach wheelchair rental service. Two types of beach-safe wheelchairs, the DeBug and Hippocampe, can be rented between 10am and 6pm seven days a week during the bathing season from June 1st to September 15th.
