Fatal road traffic collisions reported in Cork and Kildare

Two people have been killed in crashes on the roads on Sunday, in separate collisions in Cork and Kildare.

A motorcyclist was killed following a collision with a car in the village of Ballineen, Co Cork, at around 1.45pm on Sunday.

The motorcycle driver, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene, with his body removed to Cork University Hospital’s mortuary.

The driver of the car involved in the crash was not injured.

The R586 road between Bandon and Bantry has been closed to allow Garda forensic collision investigators conduct a technical examination of the scene where the collision took place.

Gardaí in Bandon are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or those driving along the road on Sunday afternoon who may have camera or dash cam footage, to contact gardaí.

Earlier a man was killed in a crash in Co Kildare in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The collision happened between two vans on the N4, Moyvalley in Co Kildare at about 2am.

The driver of one of the vans, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s body was removed to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital.

A passenger in the second van, a man in his 30s, was brought to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The road is still closed for a technical examination by forensic investigators. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to them.
