Two people have died in separate drowning incidents in Galway city.

A Garda spokesman said a man was taken from the River Corrib at Dangan at about 2pm.

The 19-year-old got into difficulty while swimming in the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, a woman’s body was fetched from the water in the city’s docks at about 2pm after it was reported to the authorities by a passer-by.

The RNLI was involved in recovering the remains of the woman, who the spokesman said was aged in her 40s or 50s. She was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Both bodies were taken to University Hospital Galway where postmortems are to be carried out, the spokesman added.
