Two dead in crashes in Roscommon and Clare

A further seven people in hospital after six-car pile up on the Cork South Ring Road

Seven people were taken to hospital after a six-car pile up in Cork yesterday, and two men died in separate car crashes in Cos Roscommon and Clare over the weekend.

In Co Cork, seven people were taken to Cork University Hospital after a six-car pile up on the South Ring Road at the Kinsale Road junction shortly after 5pm yesterday.

Gardaí have appealed for witness after the 28-year-old driver of a jeep lost his life in a crash at Coolteige Cross, Roscommon, at about 1.20 am yesterday morning.

The jeep was involved in a crash with another car before it left the road and crashed into a field, hitting a concrete fence. The 23-year-old male driver of the car and his thirty two-year-old female passenger were uninjured. The deceased man was removed to Roscommon County Hospital.

In Co Clare a man in his 70s died and his sister was injured when their car hit a ditch and rolled over on a winding road at Tullagh, near Gortmore.

The man has been named locally as John Geoghegan with an address in Ennis. It is thought that he may have suffered a heart attack or other medical episode.
