Three staff at a Co Donegal hotel have been hospitalised after an overnight fire at the premises.

The fire started just before midnight in a bedroom of the Beach Hotel in Downings and it is understood smoke spread quickly through the building.

The alarm was raised, staff rushed to the scene and the fire service was notified.

Staff formed a human chain to help rescue a resident just before the emergency services arrived. The cause of the fire is now being investigated.

Three people, understood to be all staff from the hotel, were brought to Letterkenny General Hospital for smoke inhalation. Their injuries are not understood to be serious.

The hotel remains open for business and the owners have stressed the fire was confined to one bedroom.
