Taoiseach says goverment determined to translate confidence in Irish economy into jobs

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that the Government is determined to see confidence in the Irish economy translated into jobs as he yesterday announced some 200 new jobs for Cork to bring the number announced for the region in the past week to almost 1,000.

Mr Kenny announced some 200 new jobs for Leeside with IT global services company Westbourne IT Global in Blackpool confirming it is to recruit 50 staff and global hedge fund administrator HedgeServ confirming it is to expand its workforce from 50 to 200 in Mahon.

Yesterday's announcements follow confirmation last Friday that BioMarin is to create 40 new jobs and the Phototonic Integration Centre at the Tyndall Institute is to recruit 200, while Tyco is to reopen in Cork with 500 positions and Global Reviews is to recruit 30 staff.

“I might say the purpose of my visit to Cork here is part of the Government’s programme for action on jobs this year – it’s been a very good month for Cork with 1,000 jobs announced,” said Mr Kenny at HedgeServ’s offices at CityGate in Mahon.

“It’s interesting to note that when Tyco came back here to Cork having left a number of years ago, they made the point that the return was due not just to the potential of the people that they know well in the area but also to the increased competitiveness of our country.”
