Storm Barra: 3,000 without electricity as ESB crews restore power to thousands

About 3,000 customers remain without electricity following Storm Barra with the ESB saying "small pockets" of those would have no power overnight.

ESB repair crews have restored power to thousands of businesses on Thursday but at 5.35pm, some 3,000 were still affected.

At 8.30pm on Wednesday, about 13,000 customers were without power, with areas in western and northwestern counties hit the hardest. Many had been left cut off during the night, again due to the widespread, challenging conditions.

ESB Networks has continued to apologise for the disruption “to family and commercial life”.

Crews from Northern Ireland had been brought into Kerry on Wednesday to help fix outages.

On Thursday morning, for the first time in days, Met Éireann had not issued any weather warnings. Instead, the forecast showed rain expected across the country during the morning and early afternoon, to be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Light to moderate south to southwest winds were also forecast. The forecaster said there was a chance of isolated thunderstorms, especially in the west and north on Thursday night.

A status yellow marine wind warning was issued for the west coast on Thursday evening. It will be valid for Roche’s Point to Slyne Head to Malin Head until 1pm on Friday.
