Snow and ice remain on roads in north and north west

Freezing temperatures have left roads treacherous in parts of the west and north-west

Snow and ice have made driving conditions on Saturday morning treacherous in parts of the west and north-west.

Motorists have been advised to take care on roads around Letterkenny in Co Donegal, around Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim and Boyle and Roscommon towns in Co Roscommon.

AA Roadwatch is reporting that ice remains a problem on a number of routes around Longford Town including the N63 Roscommon Road between Longford and Lanesborough and also the N55 Ballymahon/ Granard Road.

Icy conditions have been reported too around Tullamore, Co Offaly and Portlaoise, Co Laois.

Met Éireann says temperatures fell as low as minus four last night and it will be cold on Saturday with highest temperatures in the east and midlands of just 3 degrees thought it will be dry everywhere.

More frosty conditions are expected on Saturday night but cloud and fog could prevent widespread ice on the roads. Indications are that mild temperatures will set in from Sunday afternoon.
