Schoolgirl gets leg trapped between Luas and footpath

A schoolgirl who got her leg trapped between a Luas tram and the footpath in Dublin city centre today was freed with the help of fellow passengers.

It is understood the girl was taken to the Mater Hospital but her injuries are not believed to be serious.

The incident involving an inbound tram took place at the Jervis Street shopping centre stop on the red line before 8am.

A video posted on Facebook shows a girl in uniform with her foot and lower leg caught between the tram and the track. It shows passengers and passers-by gathering on the path to try and free the schoolgirl by pushing the tram to the side. The girl can be heard crying out in the video until she is freed after a few minutes.

It is understood the incident is being investigated by Luas operator Transdev Ireland.

Separately there were delays on the red line after a bread van was in collision with a Luas at the Bluebell stop shortly after 7am . It is thought the incident happened as the van did a u-turn.

There were 38 collisions between motorists and trams recorded last year - up from 24 on 2012.
