Priest dies in house fire at Fenit, Co Kerry

A priest and retired lecturer has died in a fire in his house in Fenit village near Tralee overnight.

Fr Gearoid O’Donnchada (82) was a retired lecturer, local historian and sociologist.

The house fire in the village was spotted at 2am and three fire tenders worked at the scene to bring the fire under control until 4.30 am.

Fr O’Donnchada was the driving force behind commemorations to do with St Brendan the Navigator the sixth century Kerry Saint who is said to have sailed out of Fenit to discover America. He was also behind a number of research projects into life in Kerry.

Tributes have been paid to the late priest Local Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferri, who lives in Fenit said that “the parish of Fenit and the wider community are horrified at the tragic death of Fr O’Donnchada this morning.”

Fr O’Donnchada served his parish faithfully for many years and he had a deep affection for Fenit. This affection was reciprocated by the people of the area towards him, the TD said.

“He was involved in many projects in the area over the years, none so much as the St. Brendan the Navigator statue on Samphire Island at Fenit pier which he spearheaded and will forever be connected with him.

“His historical knowledge will be impossible to replace and to his family and many friends I express my deepest sympathy.

“His passing has left a deep void and sense of bewilderment in the area which has suffered many tragedies over the years, people like Fr. O’Donnchada were always there to help in these situations and I know the parish of Fenit will rally around to help his family at this terrible time,” Mr Ferris said.

The Bishop of Kerry, Dr Ray Browne, also expressed his condolences on the death of the priest.

“I express my sorrow and sadness at the sudden, unexpected death of Fr Gearóid O’Donoghue.

“He had recently been in hospital and seriously ill [but] he was in good health and was able to again celebrate Masses this weekend for the people of Spa parish, who gave him a great welcome.”

Gardai forensic investigators are carrying out a technical examination to determine the cause of the fire. Gardai are not treating the fire as suspicious.
