Motorcylist and passenger killed in Laois collision

Fatal incident between motorbike and van took place near Arles at about 6am

Two people have been killed in a collision betwen a motorcycle and a van in Co Laois early today.

The motorbike driver and pillion passenger died at the scene of the collision which happened at about 6am. Gardai believe the pair were in their 20s or 30s.

The incident took place on the Portlaoise to Carlow road between the village of Arles and Simmons Mill, not far from the Co Carlow border.

The N80 is closed in the area and diversions are in place.

The van driver was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise but is not thought to be seriously injured.

Gardai are appealing for witnessesin the area between 5.30am and 6am to contact them at Portlaoise Garda Station on 057-8674100.
