Minister announces €8.5m transport funding for Cork

Details of €8.5 million in sustainable transport funding for Cork, including €2.9 million for redevelopment work at Kent Station, have been announced by Minister of State for Public and Commuter Transport Alan Kelly.

The funding, which will be administered by the National Transport Authority, will allow Iarnród Éireann to reorientate Kent Station, providing a more direct access to Cork city centre via the southern side of the station and Horgan's Quay.

Mr Kelly said the proposal, which has been lodged with Cork City Council, would see the provision of a direct route to the city centre for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as those wishing to take the bus from the station to the city.

The plans will involve the creation of a new entrance building to the station which will link to the existing underpass, while it will also incorporate new customer information systems, public address, ticket vending and provision for potential future retail outlets.

The plans also feature a new bi-directional road linking Railway Street/Alfred Street with Horgan’s Quay, as well as the provision of new bus stops, a set-down area on the quay and 140 pay-and-display parking spaces.

Mr Kelly said he hoped work would start within a few months.
