The Bishop of Limerick has paid tribute to Limerick priest Fr Jim Noonan, a brother of the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, who died on Tuesday.
Bishop Brendan Leahy said the death of Fr Jim Noonan after a short illness meant a remarkable priest and human being had gone to his eternal reward. He had been unwell since last autumn.
Fr Noonan, a 78-year-old native of Loughill in Co Limerick, returned to west Limerick five and a half years ago, having spent 47 years as a missionary in west Africa.
Bishop Leahy said, “He really was a remarkable man, a man who did quite remarkable work on the missions in Nigeria and in a very harsh environment”.
“We have heard many stories of his incredible spirit of giving and Christianity. He was a true missionary.”
Bishop Leahy said the parish of Shanagolden-Foynes had been delighted to welcome Fr Noonan home, to act as curate, almost six years ago.
“He was a quiet-spoken and gentle soul who had a deep interest in people and what was happening in their lives. He had a really strong and innate sense of pastoral care and made very strong connections with people. He will be very much remembered for that.”
“He really will be deeply missed and our heartfelt sympathies to this family and friends.”
Fr Noonan was a member of the St Patrick’s Missionary Society, better known as the Kiltegan Fathers. His funeral is due to take place in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow on Thursday at 12pm, with removal on Wednesday at 5.30pm.
