Man seriously hurt following Stoneybatter explosion

Suspected gas blast ripped through terraced house on Dublin’s northside

A man was hospitalised with severe burn injuries after an explosion ripped through a terraced house on Dublin’s northside yesterday evening.

The 58-year-old man was taken from the house on Sullivan Street, just off Arbour Hill, by members of Dublin Fire Brigade and brought to the Mater Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Six units of the fire brigade were called to the incident which happened shortly after 6pm. Nearby Infirmary Road was closed from Parkgate Street for around 90 minutes as a result of the explosion.

A gas leak is suspected to have caused the blast which tore the front off the house. Neighbouring properties were damaged and 10 homes evacuated due to the structural damage. A technical crew from Bord Gáis Networks were working with a unit of Dublin Fire Brigade to establish the cause of the incident.
