A 29-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with an incident in Cork city in which a young woman was shot in the neck.
Gavin Sheehan of Laurel Ridge, Shanakiel, Co Cork was charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and the reckless discharge of a firearm contrary to the Firearms and Offences Act of 1964 which was later amended in 1990.
Cork District Court heard evidence from Detective Garda Pat Condon who said gardai at Gurranabraher Garda Station charged Mr Sheehanon May 17th with the three firearms offences . Mr Sheehan made no reply to each charge after caution, the court heard.
The charges relate to an incident at the Hollywood Estate, Hollyhill, Cork in the early hours of last Sunday morning in which Ciara Sheehan (21) was shot. Ms Sheehan, of Ardcullen, Knocknaheeny, Co Cork is recovering from her injuries at Cork University Hospital.
Mr Sheehan was charged with discharging a firearm on May 15th, being reckless as to whether any person was injured or not. He was also charged with possession of a 9mm round of ammunition.
Mr Sheehan was also charged that at Laurel Ridge, Shanakiel he did have possession of a Smith and Wesson model 6096 semi-automatic firearm.
No bail application was made.
Free legal aid was granted in the case as Mr Sheehan is currently unemployed and is in receipt of job seekers’ allowance.
He was dressed in a cream Adidas top and jeans and did not speak during the brief hearing.
Judge Aingeal Ní Chonduin remanded Mr Sheehan in custody. He will appear before the court again via video link on May 25th.
Gardaí are awaiting the directions of the DPP in relation to the case.
