Man remanded for alleged assault on woman in Cork

A 29-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with a number of offences relating to an alleged assault on a woman in her 30s in Kinsale in Co Cork last week.

Derek Harvey, a native of Co Leitrim but with an address at Flat 1, Market Place, Kinsale, was charged with three offences when he appeared before a special sitting of Bandon District Court yesterday.

Mr Harvey was charged with falsely imprisoning a woman, assaulting her causing her harm and threatening to kill her or cause her serious harm at an address in Kinsale on September 12th.

Det Garda Eilis Murphy gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that Mr Harvey made no reply to any of the three charges when they were put to him after caution.

Insp Brendan Fogarty said that gardaí were objecting to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges and the fear that Mr Harvey would not abscond and not stand trial if granted bail.

Insp Fogarty said that he was also objecting to bail on the grounds that he was concerned about the possibility of Mr Harvey seeking to interfere with witnesses in the case.

Defence solicitor, Diarmuid O’Shea said that his client was willing to reside at his family home in Co Leitrim, surrender his passport and abide by any conditions set by the court if granted bail.

However Judge Terence Finn said he was not willing to grant bail given the seriousness of the charges and he remanded Mr Harvey in custody to appear again on September 20th.
