Man in hospital after being stabbed in the heart in Cork

Victim in serious but stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery

Gardaí have begun an investigation after a 38-year-old man was left with life-threatening injuries when he was stabbed in the heart in Cork city over the weekend.

The man was stabbed three times including once in the heart during a row outside at house at Croaghtamore Square in Glasheen on Cork's southside at 1.30am yesterday morning.

The man, who is from Ballyphehane, was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he underwent emergency surgery for life threatening injuries in the early hours of the morning.

It's understood that the man's condition improved following surgery and it's now believed that he is in a serious but stable condition and remains in the Intensive Care Unit at CUH.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene of the stabbing and preserved it overnight to allow garda technical experts carry out a forensic examination of the scene.

They have taken a number of statements from people who were in the house as well as other witnesses while they have also begun door-to-door inquiries in the area.
