Man fighting for life after being electrocuted at factory site

A 38-year-old man is fighting for his life at Cork University Hospital after he was electrocuted at a site in Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

The man was working near turbine-type machinery at a factory on the outskirts of the town at about 10am on Wednesday when the incident occurred.

It is understood a metal spanner being used by the man may have come in contact with a live electrical source.

The Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident. The site of the incident was sealed off for a technical examination.

Cyclist death

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old cyclist who died in a collision between Rosscarbery and Connonagh in West Cork on Tuesday night has been named locally as Stefan Cooper.

The cyclist collided with a car on the Cork to Bantry Road shortly before 7pm.

Efforts were made by paramedics to resuscitate the young man but he died before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

The driver of the car was uninjured but was treated at the scene for shock.
