A man has died in a single vehicle crash near Ballina, Co Mayo.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which occured at about 6.30pm on Wednesday evening.

The young man (20) was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and hit a tree on the old Ballina to Foxford road.

He was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to Castlebar Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place later today.

The road is currently closed, Garda Forensic Collision investigators will examine the scene and local diversions are in place.
