Man charged with impersonating garda and stealing from 97-year-old

John Buddy O’Brien brought before Mallow District Court where he was charged with two offences

A man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with impersonating a garda and stealing €700 in cash from a 97-year-old man in Cork.

John Buddy O'Brien (41), with an address at Barrack Street, Waterford, was brought before Mallow District Court where he was charged with two offences.

He was charged with stealing €700 at the SuperValu car park in Newmarket, Cork, on January 19th, 2017, and with impersonating a member of An Garda Síochána at the same location on the same date contrary to Section 6 (1) (A) of the Garda Síochána Act 2005.

Det Garda Padraig Reddington gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to both charges, and told the court that Mr O'Brien made no reply to either charge after caution.

Insp Tony Sullivan said the DPP had directed summary disposal at District Court level, and asked to have the matter adjourned until December 12th when the court can decide on jurisdiction.

Mr O’Brien said he was not applying for bail at the moment, and would brief his solicitor before December 12th.

Judge Brian Sheridan remanded him in custody to appear again on that date.
