Man arrested as Cork hit-and-run leaves boy (7) critical

Gardaí were tonight questioning a 48-year-old man about a hit-and-run incident which left a seven-year-old boy fighting for his life in hospital.

The incident happened in Ballymacoda village near Youghal in east Cork when the boy was struck by a car that failed to stop as he was playing near his home around 1pm.

The emergency services were alerted and the boy was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he remains in intensive care in a critical condition.

Gardaí began an investigation and traced the car to a local man who voluntarily accompanied gardaí to Midleton Garda Station where he assisted them with their inquiries.

Officers later arrested the man under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and detained him at Midleton Garda Station for questioning about the hit-and-run.

Gardaí also impounded the man’s car which has been removed for a technical and forensic examination to establish if it was the vehicle involved in the collision.
