Gardaí are investigating after a man died after being hit by a car in Co Carlow on Christmas Day .

The man (29) was on foot at the time of the collision at Gorteengrone, Co Carlow at about 7.20pm, according to gardaí.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital, where a postmortem will be arranged.

The male driver and sole occupant of the car was uninjured in the collision.

The R448 has been closed to facilitate a forensic examination and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information, particularly those who may have been on the R448 Castledermot-Carlow Road on Friday evening.
