A 28-year-old man has died after the car he was driving crashed into another vehicle in Co Cork this afternoon.

The two cars collided on the M8 northbound between Michelstown and Fermoy at about 2.40pm.

The 71-year-old woman who was driving the second car was airlifted to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

The female passenger of the first car was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The M8 northbound between junctions 13 and 14 is still closed to facilitate a Garda investigation, and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Fermoy Garda station on 021 - 4522000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda station.
