Emergency services closed all north bound lanes on the M50 at the junction 16 Cherrywood exit after a car overturned this evening, spilling petrol across the motorway.

The road later reopened.

Gardaí have said there are no serious injuries a result but peak-hour Friday traffic was severely disrupted.

The incident occurred at approximately 5pm when traffic flow is at its heaviest.

It is unclear exactly what happened to cause the car to overturn. The small black saloon was hoisted onto a breakdown truck and emergency services cleaned up the discarded fuel.
