Luas strikes to continue with little chance of resolution in sight

Luas services face strike action again tomorrow as the dispute between the drivers and the operator of the Dublin light rail system shows no sign of being resolved.

A spokeswoman for Transdev said she was not aware of any moves to resolve the dispute, while Siptu divisional organiser Owen Reidy described the situation as "stuck", with no signs of any planned intervention.

As the Luas drivers are continuing to implement a work-to-rule, their employer is docking them 10 per cent of their pay since last Friday. The workers will notice the reduction in their monthly payment at the end of May.

As well as an all-day stoppage on Wednesday, there are stoppages planned for Friday, May 13th, Friday, May 20th, Thursday, May 26th (four hours from 3pm–7pm) and Friday, May 27th.

While the company has increased its offer to the workers and some grades have accepted it, the drivers, while having reduced their demand, are still seeking more than the company is currently willing to concede.

A source said that with no settlement proposal likely to be delivered, the chances of an intervention as matters stood were not good.
