Irish woman (35) dies on charity trip in East Africa

Woman who worked for company based in Cork was due to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

A 35-year-old Irish woman has died while in Africa to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

The woman, whose cause of death has not yet been confirmed, died on Friday.

She is understood to be from the Cork/Waterford area.

She was in East Africa as part of a charity fund-raiser and was due to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as part of her trip. She worked for a company based in Co Cork.

Her family members were notified of her death on Friday afternoon.

The Department of Foreign Affairs will liaise with the family of the deceased in the coming days in relation to the repatriation of her remains.

Earth’s Edge, which organises adventure holidays, issued a brief statement saying: “We have a group trekking on Kilimanjaro at the moment and one of our team has unfortunately passed away. We have informed her family.

“She died of unknown causes while being attended to by a doctor at the scene.”

An earlier statement on the company’s Facebook page said: “A client of ours passed away on the 14th July 2017 at 8.15am local time while on Kilimanjaro. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family. We will provide further information on this incident in due course.”

A spokesman for Earth’s Edge said earlier reports that she died in road accident were inaccurate.
