Ireland still in with a chance to host America’s Cup after deadline extended

Ireland’s chances of hosting the America’s Cup are not completely sunk after the organisers extended the deadline for bids.

The 37th America’s Cup is due to take place in 2024, with three venues in the race to host it. The deadline for submitting bids was supposed to be Friday September 17th, but it has been put back for an indeterminate amount of time.

The Government has told the organisers of the yachting race it requires a further six months to evaluate the case for hosting the event, a move expected to scupper hopes it could take place in Cork in 2024.

Minister for Sport Catherine Martin said on Wednesday there has not been enough time to assess the possibility of Government support for the bid.

Some officials believe the State could yet face costs exceeding €200 million to run the race. The final decision on who will host the event has been held back as a late bid has come in from Auckland, New Zealand, which hosted the event earlier this year.

Similarly, the organisers said they needed more time to visit the venues but that has not been possible at present.
