An investigation is underway to identify the body of a person who was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Co Mayo this morning.

The car left the road shortly after 1am at Cartoon near Newport and caught fire.

When emergency services extinguished the fire they discovered a body inside the vehicle although the gender of the deceased is unclear.

The road has been closed for a forensic examination.
