The family of new world champion Robert Heffernan have spoken of their absolute delight at his victory in the 50km walk in the World Athletics Championships.
Heffernan claimed Ireland's first gold medal for 18 years after a stunning performance this morning in Moscow.
Robert’s father Bobby said he got up at 4am to watch the race along with his other son Elton and that at various stages he became so nervous that he couldn’t watch.
“At one stage towards the end I was walking up and down along the road outside but I came back for the last half a kilometre.
“I am so proud. All the emotions came flooding out and I was crying. I have no doubt it was my late wife Maureen who got Rob over the line.”
Elton said they hadn’t had an opportunity to speak to their brother yet but that they were looking forward to a celebration at the family home in Derrynane Road in Ballyphehane in Cork on his return.
