Historic Mills grenade made safe with controlled explosion

Suspect device uncovered during garden works in Kilcarbery outside Wexford

A historic but still viable grenade was rendered safe by the Army Bomb Disposal team in Co Wexford yesterday evening.

The Mills type grenade turned up during garden works in the Kilcarbery area outside Enniscorthy.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team in response to a request from the Garda to deal with the suspect device.

The team arrived on scene at 5.20pm and the device was safely transported to an open green area for a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 6.10 pm.

The grenade in question dates from the early 20th century era and would have been in use during the War of Independence and Civil War.
