Happy couple back in Tralee one year after marriage proposal

Molly Molloy Gambel flabbergasted by on-air proposal during Rose of Tralee last year

One year on from the day of that live Rose of Tralee marriage proposal, former New Orleans Rose Molly Molloy Gambel and her now-husband Kyle Catlett have returned to Tralee.

Mr Catlett (23) stunned his then girlfriend with a live proposal during the Rose of Tralee last year.

Having said no 11 times in response, she finally said yes - much to the delight and relief of all concerned.

The proposal was recently voted by viewers as the most memorable moment in the history of the competition. It has also been viewed almost a half a million times on YouTube.

The happy couple got married on May 24th in Sacred Heart Church, Fairhope, in the picturesque surroundings of Mobile Bay, Alabama. It was a big event, in front of between 200 and 300 guests.

They planned for the wedding even before leaving Tralee last year, securing the church where she went to Mass as a child.

“I knew since I was little that I wanted to get married in that church. My grandmother and all my family helped my plan,” she said.

Molly Molloy put down her initial 11 negative responses to her then-suitor as a verbal tic brought on by nervousness.

“It was overwhelming. I was being proposed to when I thought I was just coming on stage to do an interview,” she said.

“We had discussed it [getting married] when we finished college, but I had no thought in my mind that this would happen.”

The couple are now living in Tampa, Florida, where Kyle’s family lives. They both work in commercial real estate.

They hope to start a family, but their initial desire is to travel and see the world.

Kyle said her acceptance of his proposal was the happiest day of his life, surpassed only by the wedding day itself.

“I was fine until I was standing on my altar. I got butterflies and I knew this was the moment I was waiting for since she said yes. I had a few tears going,” he recalled.

The couple's wedding will now be the subject of an RTÉ documentary, The Proposal, which will be broadcast on September 24th.
