Gardaí treating death of man in Cork as suspicious

Gardaí in Cork have confirmed that they are treating as suspicious the death of a 36-year-old man who was was found collapsed on a city quay earlier this week.

The man, a native of Carpenterstown in Dublin, was found collapsed on St Patrick's Quay in Cork city centre at around 10.30pm on Thursday and rushed to Cork University Hospital.

The man underwent emergency surgery for a head injury but died at CUH around 2am and gardaí requested the services of the State pathologist’s Office.

Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster carried out a post-mortem on the deceased this morning at CUH but gardaí are not releasing her findings for operational reasons.

However gardaí confirmed they are now treating the man’s death as suspicious and said they believe he was involved in an altercation shortly before he was found.

They have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the altercation at the Patrick’s Bridge end of Patrick’s Quay to contact gardaí at Mayfield Garda Station on 021-4558510.

Gardaí have also begun examining CCTV footage in the area.
