Gardaí awaiting results of postmortem following Cork death due to head injuries

Gardaí say the course of their investigation into the death of a 45-year-old man in Cork at the weekend will be determined by the results of a postmortem .

The man, who has been named locally as father of one Mark Foley, suffered serious head injuries when he was assaulted a month ago on the Lower Glanmire Road just before 9pm on November 4th. He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Mr Foley, who was originally from Churchfield on Cork's north side but had been living in a B & B on the Lower Glanmire Road, was put on a life-supporting ventilator at CUH but never regained consciousness and died in the early hours of Sunday, December 5th.

Gardaí were notified at the time of the assault and began harvesting CCTV from premises in the area. They also carried out door-to-door inquiries and appealed for any witnesses to contact them at Mayfield Garda station, where an incident room was set up.

Officers also cordoned off the scene, and Garda technical experts carried out a forensic examination as detectives moved quickly and arrested two men and a woman in their 20s for questioning.

Gardaí later released one of the men and the woman without charge, and a file will be prepared for the DPP, while a 28-year-old man was subsequently brought to court and charged with assault causing harm to Mr Foley. He is due back in court this week.

Meanwhile gardaí requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office and pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collins is currently carrying out a postmortem on Mr Foley's remains at CUH. Her findings will determine the next step in the Garda investigation, a Garda source said.
