Garda sergeant assaulted while bringing patient to hospital

Officer suffered injuries to his neck when bringing a young man to hospital for psychiatric treatment

A garda sergeant was treated in hospital in Cork last night after he was assaulted while helping colleagues to bring a young man to hospital for psychiatric treatment.

The incident happened around 6.30pm when gardaí from Gurranabraher Garda Station responded to a call from a family where a young man was experiencing mental health difficulties.

Gardaí arrived at the house and were about to convey the man to the psychiatric unit at the Mercy University Hospital when he became aggressive and scratched one garda and punched another.

A garda sergeant who was with the two officers went to assist them but the young man pushed him against a wall and the garda sergeant suffered injuries to his neck.
