Four dead in separate road incidents over the weekend

Lives lost in crashes in Wexford, Kerry, Westmeath and Dublin city

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a road traffic incident in which a 94-year-old man was fatally injured. His was one of four road deaths over the weekend.

The man was a passenger in a car, which was involved in a three-car collision near Murrintown, Co Wexford yesterday at about 4.45 pm. The crash occurred on a minor road at Gurteenminogue Lower, Murrintown. the man was removed to Wexford General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The 80-year-old female driver of the car, and the two occupants of a second car, a 27 year old woman and a four-year-old girl, were also treated in hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The occupants of the third car were uninjured. The road is currently closed to traffic to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators and the Coroner has been notified. Earlier yesterday afternoon a 44-four-year old man was fatally injured when the motorbike he was driving collided with a car in Walkinstown, Dublin He was later pronounced dead at Tallaght hospital.

And a mother-of-three killed in a single vehicle incident on Saturday on the Ballyduff to Tralee road at Ballingcosig Cross, Lixnaw in north Kerry has been named locally as Catherine Dowling (50) from Ballyduff. Her two teenage daughters who were passengers were taken to Tralee General Hospital, where the condition of one is described as serious.

Ms Dowling, originally from Dublin, was a secondary school teacher at Presentation in Tralee where she taught German.

And a 24-year-old woman has died in hospital from injuries sustained when she was struck by a car in Co Westmeath on Wednesday.

The pedestrian was injured in Glasson Village outside Athlone. She was taken to Beaumont Hospital but died on Friday evening.
