Five killed in crashes across Ireland over weekend

Five people died over the weekend as a result of crashes in counties Tipperary, Antrim and Tyrone.

A two-car crash on the N52 Nenagh to Borrisokane road on Friday evening claimed the lives of Michael and Carmel Flannery, who were travelling in the same car.

Their son David Flannery (24), who was travelling with them, was said to be in a critical condition in Limerick Regional Hospital yesterday.

It is understood that he was a back seat passenger in the car when the crash occurred at about 5.20pm.

A woman driver of the second car involved was not seriously injured, according to the Garda.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the crash to contact Nenagh Garda station on 067-50450, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666111 or any Garda station.

In Co Tyrone, two men died in a single-vehicle crash that happened about 4am yesterday on the Old Coagh Road near Cookstown. It is understood the car left the road and crashed into a garden, coming to rest on its side.

Earlier a six-year-old boy, one of twins knocked down in an incident in Lisburn, Co Antrim last Wednesday, died of his injuries in hospital.

He was Diarmuid Frazer who had been for a haircut with a parent and his brother when they were struck by a car on Railway Street in the city.

He died on Saturday. The other twin remains in hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.

The three deaths bring to 16 the lives lost on northern roads since the start of the year, a figure which is ahead of the 13 lives lost at this date in 2013 and double the total for the first three months of 2012.

The deaths in Co Tipperary bring to 43 the number of people killed on the Republic’s roads since the start of the year. The number is two less than that in the similar period in 2013.

The total number of fatal collisions was 40, as against 41 for the similar period in 2013.

So far this year the road deaths in the Republic have included 11 pedestrians and 23 drivers, four passengers, two motorcyclists and three pedal cyclists.
