Tickets for a free Van Morrison concert will be drawn from a lottery. Fans are being invited to enter the online competition for the gig in his native Belfast to celebrate his being conferred the freedom of the city.

Two thousand tickets for the Waterfront Hall show on November 15th are up for grabs. Council chiefs said residents from across the city can enter the draw from tomorrow on-line at www.belfastcity.gov.uk and www.waterfront.co.uk or in person at the Waterfront Hall booking office.

Lord Mayor Mairtin O Muilleoir, who will confer the freedom of Belfast on Morrison on the evening, said a huge level of interest was expected and their only disappointment is not being able to accommodate all the fans who want to be there.

“It will be a very special occasion and will live long in the memory of those in attendance,” he said. “The term living legend is too loosely thrown around these days but there is no doubting Van Morrison’s eligibility for such status due to his incredible talent as a songwriter, musician and vocalist.”

Fans can enter the competition up until 5pm on Wednesday, October 30th. A computerised draw will ensure a spread of people from different parts of the city, said Belfast City Council. Winners will receive two tickets each for either a standing or seated area.
