Exhibition to begin in memory of murdered Karen Buckley

Clay angels made in memory of murdered Irish nurse Karen Buckley will go on display as part of an exhibition at a library in Limerick next month.

Ms Buckley, a qualified nurse from Mourneabbey, Co Cork went missing during a night out at the Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow's West End on April 11th last. Her body was discovered four days later.

The Angels for Karen exhibition will be launched at Killmallock Library as part of an international campaign, 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women.

Show of support

Members of Killmallock Women's Group decided to make the angels as a show of support to member Eileen Hurley, an aunt of the deceased.

The alarm was raised on April 11th after Karen failed to return to her friends at a nightclub in Glasgow having told them she was going to use the rest room.

Karen (24) was seen on CCTV leaving the club with Alexander Pacteau, and police later traced the courier firm director to his apartment.

Her body was found four days after her disappearance by police at a farm on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Ms Buckley was repeatedly hit on the head with a heavy object. Pacteau attempted to dispose of the her body in a plastic barrel filled with chemicals.

Pacteau, with an address at Dorchester Avenue in Glasgow, was jailed for a minimum of 23 years for the murder.

Appeal over sentence

The three judges of the Court of Criminal Appeal, which sits in Edinburgh, will hear Pacteau’s appeal against severity of sentence on December 4th.

Following Ms Buckley's death two books of condolences were set up at the Cork County Council headquarters in Mallow and at the Hibernian Hotel in the town where Karen worked as a teenager.

The exhibition will open on December 9th next in Killmallock Library.
