Dublin Fire Brigade battling gorse fire in Howth

Dublin Fire Brigade are battling a gorse wildfire in Howth, Co Dublin, which started on Monday evening.

The fire brigade has three units and a district officer at the scene near Balscadden.

Vegetation in the Irish countryside is at risk from fire due to the recent dry spell and sunny weather, according to the fire brigade, and these wildfires can spread rapidly leading to serious damage to land and property.

The fire brigade said that these fires often are caused by human activity, and people should try to limit any activities that may cause a fire, especially during sunny weather.

They advised the public to avoid lighting campfires and barbecues outside of designated areas, and all smoking materials should be disposed of in a responsible manner.

People enjoying the outdoors and other amenities should leave no trace, meaning that all litter should be taken home.

“The sun’s energy can be magnified through glass bottles, and litter can be set on fire by opportunistic arsonists,” the fire brigade said on their website.

They encouraged people to report suspicious or anti-social behaviour to gardaí as soon as possible.

The fire brigade also said people should not park their cars on grass verges, as the car’s exhaust system can start a fire.

They also urged people to park responsibly, as illegal and irresponsible parking can hamper fire fighter’s efforts to reach the fire quickly.
