Dublin bus driver hospitalised after suffering heart attack during rush hour

A Dublin Bus driver and cyclist are in hospital after the driver suffered a heart attack while travelling through Dublin's city centre on Monday morning.

The number 16 Dublin Bus was involved in a "minor collision" with a cyclist at around 7.40am on Monday after the driver suffered a heart attack while travelling down Westmoreland Street.

The male driver, who is in his 50s, was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital. His condition is unknown.

The male cyclist, in his 40s, was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

O’Connell Bridge was temporarily closed following the collision but reopened a short time later.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus said that all drivers were trained in “comprehensive procedures” for dealing with these types of emergency situations.

All vehicles are equipped with a radio which immediately connects with the Dublin Bus central control centre who in turn contact the emergency services, she said.

Gardaí are investigating the incident.
