A 45-year-old man was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a barrier in Co Laois this morning.

The man was travelling south along the M7 when the incident occurred at Knockaroo in Borris in Ossory at around 6.40am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Midlands Hospital Portaloise, where a post mortem will take place tomorrow.

The road was closed for a time to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, but has since reopened.
