Cyclist dies following road collision in Co Cork

Woman in her 50s was going to visit elderly relative when she was killed outside Skibbereen

A female cyclist in her 50s has died after being hit by a car in Skibbereen, Co Cork while on her way to visit an elderly relative in hospital.

The woman, who was a mother of two from Clonakilty, was struck about 1pm on the N71 in the townland of Aghills near the Shepperton Lakes.

The driver of the car, a woman in her early 60s from the West Cork, was uninjured  but badly shaken by the incident and treated for shock at the scene by paramedics.

The woman’s body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem examination will be carried out.

The road has been closed and diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Skibbereen are appealing to any persons who may have travelled the road this afternoon or who can assist gardaí in the investigation to contact them at Clonakilty Garda Station on 023 - 8821570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
