Cyclist (16) killed after collision with car in Co Kildare is named

A teenage boy who died after he collided with a car while cycling has been named as Shane Duggan (16) from Straffan, Co Kildare.

The boy was cycling near his home on Tuesday when his bike collided with a car at 4.50 pm.

He was taken to Beaumont hospital in Dublin where he was treated for head injuries but was pronounced dead earlier on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was not injured.

A Garda investigation is underway.

His death brings to seven the number of cyclists killed on the State’s roads so far this year. A total of 74 other people have been killed so far, five more than the comparable figure for the same date in 2017.

These include a 21-year-old man who died following a single car crash near Navan, Co Meath early Saturday.

The 21-year-old died when the car in which he was a front seat passenger left the road at Gibbstown, Navan at approximately 4am.

The male driver, understood to be 23-years-old, was injured and was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where his injuries were described as not life-threatening.
