Boy (3) and two men killed in Bank Holiday crashes

Three people were killed in road crashes yesterday including a three-year-old boy who was fatally injured in a collision in Co Monaghan.

The boy was a passenger in a blue Nissan car which was travelling towards Carrickmacross on the N2 when it was in a crash with a Renault at Annamarron at approximately 6.30pm. The Nissan in which the boy and his mother were travelling burst into flames following the crash.

The boy was removed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he was pronounced dead. The child’s mother, understood to be in her mid-thirties was critically injured and was removed by air ambulance to hospital in Dublin. The two women in the Renault, also understood to be in their thirties, had injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to hospital in Drogheda.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Carrickmacross Garda station on 042-9690190 or the Garda confidential line 1-800666111. They are particularly anxious to speak to the driver of a lorry who stopped at the scene. Elsewhere, a young man died after the car he was driving crashed into a ditch in Co Cork early yesterday morning. The 24-year-old man was the only occupant of a Honda Civic travelling on a back road at Lower Killeens near Blarney at about 1.50am.

The emergency services were alerted but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí at Bray, Co Wicklow, are investigating a fatal crash at Calary on the main Kilmacanogue to Roundwood Road late yesterday afternoon.

A 40 year old man was killed when his motorcycle hit a tree at 5.35pm yesterday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
