The Army bomb disposal team exploded what it described as a “complex” improvised bomb in Co Carlow on Thursday evening.

The viable device was found in Kilmeaney, and the Army responded after a request from gardaí for assistance.

The Army arrived at the scene at about 5pm, it said in a statement, and assessed the device before carrying out a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 6pm and the remains of the device were removed to a secure military location for further examination.

“Any material with an evidential value will be handed over to the gardaí to aid in their investigations,” it said.
