The body of a man who got into difficulty in the River Shannon at the University of Limerick has been recovered from the water.
The alarm was raised shortly after 6pm yesterday after the man, believed to be in his 20s, entered the water with a horse.
Members of the Fire Service, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue and gardaí all responded to the call. Rescue 115 - the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter - also assisted in the search operation.
The search resumed this morning with divers from the Killaloe-Ballina Search and Recovery unit also providing assistance.
The body was recovered in an area of the river adjacent to the old swimming pool at UL at about 9.10am.
According to several eye-witnesses, the man got into difficulty after he entered the water with a horse at an area of the river known locally as the Sandy.
Witnesses said the horse got out of the water on the Clare side of the river.
The victim is from a large family living on the south side of Limerick city.
